Guam’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts promote Stewardship Week

Updated: Jan 4

The Northern and Southern Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Guam are partnering with the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) to celebrate the 69th Annual Stewardship Week from April 28 to May 5, 2024. The Stewardship Week program, which is overseen by NACD, is one of the largest national annual programs that promotes conservation. This year's theme is "May the Forest Be with You, Always," and it recognizes the importance of forests in the protection of soil and water resources, preventing erosion, purifying contaminants, and nurturing healthy watersheds.

Guam’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) were formed to assist the island’s people in implementing conservation programs and promoting efforts to protect and improve natural resources. During Stewardship Week, they will host various activities to promote the importance of Soil and Water Conservation, with a special emphasis on Forest Health.

To kick off Stewardship Week, the public is invited to attend the Governor's proclamation signing ceremony on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. in the Large Conference Room of the Governor's Office in Adelup. The ceremony will mark the official declaration of April 28 - May 05 as Soil and Water Stewardship Week in Guam.

Other activities include, a community tree planting event on Saturday, May 04, 2024 with the Guam Department of Agriculture; workshops on conservation best management practices, a poster contest, and more.

In addition to these engaging activities, the SWCDs, in partnership with KUAM, will be hosting Public Service Announcements featuring subject matter experts providing great tips on how to better care for our forest environments and soil and water resources. The community is encouraged to follow social media platforms to tune in.

Guam’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts are a vital resource for those interested in expanding awareness about the importance of soil and water as a resource for our communities and ecosystems. Such resources are essential for drinking, cleaning, swimming, growing our food, and so much more. Connect with your local SWCD to learn more on how you can get involved.
